When Captain Roger Wilson pays a visit to his teenaged nephew, Tod Holton, he gives him a green beret as a souvenir. However, this is no ordinary beret. Captain Wilson bravely risked his life to save a group of Vietnamese monks from the Vietcong guerillas. In gratitude, the abbot bestowed jungle magic upon Wilson’s beret with the qualification that only one who is young and noble by nature will have the sorcery at his command. Captain Wilson didn’t believe that there was anything to the old monk’s words, but when Tod places the beret on his head, he is transformed into a full-grown adult who has amazing magical powers. As Super Green Beret, Tod can hear telepathic messages from anywhere and transports himself to combat zones to aid GIs in dangerous situations. He later discovers that the magic Green Beret can even transport him back in time to aid soldiers in World War II. This strange title is a cross between the standard war comic and the magic boy-to-adult motif of Captain Marvel. It appears that this book was an attempt to capitalize on the popularity that the Green Berets enjoyed in the mid-1960s. It is certainly a product of its time. There is no question of the nobility of war in Vietnam and the Vietcong are faceless villains, depicted much like the Japanese were in comics two decades earlier.
